Cracking the YouTube Shorts Algorithm
Unlike long-form YouTube videos which rely on Click-Through Rate (CTR) driven by custom thumbnails, YouTube Shorts are fed to users automatically in a swipeable feed. This entirely changes how the algorithm judges your content.
The Most Important Metric: Viewed vs. Swiped Away
If you look at your YouTube Studio analytics for Shorts, you will see a percentage for "Viewed" versus "Swiped away." This is the gatekeeper of virality.
When YouTube tests your Short on the first 1,000 people, if 50% of them swipe away within the first 2 seconds, the algorithm concludes your video is uninteresting and stops pushing it. To go viral, you need a "Viewed" percentage of 70% or higher.
How to Stop the Swipe
- The Visual Hook: You cannot start a Short with a generic intro. The very first frame must have action, movement, or a highly compelling visual text hook on the screen.
- Cut the Fluff: If there is a 1.5-second pause of you taking a breath before you speak, trim it. Users will swipe instantly.
- Pattern Interrupts: Every 3 to 5 seconds, change the scene, add a sound effect, zoom in slightly, or pop text on the screen. This resets the viewer's attention span and prevents them from swiping.
